Whalehead Club
Located in the quaint village of Corolla on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the Whalehead Club stands as a reminder of the golden age of hunting the Currituck County. In 1922, northern industrialist, Edward Collings Knight, Jr., and wife, Marie Louise LeBel, resided the winter, in their newly acquired Whalehead Club and began construction of a 21,000 sq.ft. private residence. Its location on Currituck Sound and the Atlantic Flyway was perfect for the Knight’s love of waterfowl hunting. Three years and $385,000 later "cottage" on the sound was complete. It was unlike any the people of Corolla had seen before.
Whalehead Club neighbors and is within sight of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. It is a historic hunt club that was built in the 1920’s. It recently opened to the public after years of renovation. It can be seen very clearly from the top of the lighthouse. There is also a large natural area between the lighthouse and the Whalehead Club. A path over a wooden bridge will lead you from the light station to the club where you can tour the Whalehead building for $7.
