MANTEO, N.C. — The federal budget includes $3 million to restore the deteriorating Bodie Island Lighthouse on North Carolina’s Outer Banks.
The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported Thursday that the money is the estimated amount for a complete restoration of the 1872 lighthouse structure north of Oregon Inlet.

Moonlight tours of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Moonlight tours of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse will be offered this Saturday ( 8/16/08 ). There will be two tours 8pm and 9pm. Guests will use flashlights to navigate the 257 step spiral staircase.

Harkers Island, N.C. — The National Park Service (NPS) announced today that “Open House” tours of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse have been suspended for public safety reasons. Superintendent Russel J. Wilson said that an engineer’s inspection conducted this month revealed significant deterioration to the integrity of the tower’s circular stairway.
