Bodie Island Lighthouse reopens after repairs

Date July 28, 2007

From hamptonroads.com:

The base of the Bodie Island Lighthouse
will open to the public Tuesday for the first time in three years,
thanks to a $100,000 emergency restoration project recently completed,
the National Park Service announced Friday.

The lighthouse closed to visitors in 2004 after chunks of cast iron
fell from the balcony and top window, the park service said in a news
release. Guided by volunteers, visitors can walk inside the old oil
house and get a view of the tower’s winding staircase from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The lighthouse will not be
open for climbing.
